Medical Device vulnerabilities actively exploited in the wild.

I read an interesting article over the holiday break. It’s a little dated being from 2022 but the findings and underlying issues are still relevant.

The article found that some of the vulnerabilities that impact medical technology are actively being exploited in the wild and many are used by malware deployed by APT’s (advanced persistent threats). In fact, our own database of medical device vulnerabilities shows over 190 vulnerabilities that impact medical devices have known exploitations in the wild.

It is often easy to think that the medical technology we in Biomedical Engineering support is immune from these kinds of threats. Our technology is too “niche” and specialized to be targeted. This research shines a light on the fallacy of this perspective and outlines some of the all too real risks. The premise of the article, and its data, demonstrates the need for a sound cybersecurity program and strategy within healthcare organizations. Biomedical Engineering is uniquely positioned to fill this role.
